Painted Hall

In 2014 I took many pictures of the ceiling in the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, UK. They were stitched together.

As one can see I missed a corner and could have produced a better image. I think the glare could be eliminated. I was hoping to do this in the spring of 2017, but other plans were afoot. Upon entering the hall I was greeted with scaffolding.

Painted HallFor a small fee visitors were allowed to climb sixty feet up to view the conservators’ work just beyond our reach. We were given a well presented tour of the 3,400 square metres of the 20 year work of Sir James Thornhill which began in 1708. He went on to paint the dome at St Paul’s.

A few pictures taken from just below the ceiling show some of the work that had to be repaired and the detail of the painting. The top-right image shows a crack that will be repaired. Other defects are easier to spot on my full-sized images.
